Lifestyle | Barter Books, Alnwick

It's the Easter holidays, yay! I have a full 2 weeks to sleep and recover. Last week we were driving back from Holy Island and decided to stop off in Alnwick. I'd heard about Barter Books before and decide to pop in to see what all of the fuss was about.

Stepping inside the old building there were rows upon rows of books. From recently released to books which were older than myself.

I absolutely loved the quirkiness of the place. From the quotes from books displayed above our heads to the train track that ran around the top of the bookshelves - with a working train!

Having a browse of the outdoor books (bet you were expecting fashion or romance novels) I came across this unbelievably sexist book which made me laugh. It was first published in 1915 but reprinted in 2007 however, this just shows you how much times have changed. Considering girls who like the outdoors are considered as 'tomboys' and the normal role of a girl is behind the kitchen sink.

We also came across a book whose author is the one and only Charles Darwin. Obviously, this book was kept clear from prying hands and displayed in a bookcase. It also came with an impressive price ag of £4,200!

The atmosphere in this book shop is like no other. There are people chilling out with glasses of wine and cups of tea while reading books around the shop. Inside of the shop, there is a cafe with a few different rooms to eat in. This is not your regular cafe, we ate our lunch sitting on church pews. Its friendly vibe doesn't end there, Barter Books is also dog-friendly with a working water fountain within the shop to give your pooch a well-deserved drink.

You can find Barter Books at:
